Mitsubishi i MiEV

Also based on the Mitsubishi i kei car, it was first exhibited at the 22nd International Battery, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exposition in Yokohama. This vehicle was the first where the "i" in MIEV stood for "innovative", as it eschews the in-wheel motors in favour of a more conventional array of batteries, motor and inverter to replace the "rear midship" engine and fuel tank of the conventional car. MMC provided three power companies with vehicles in 2006 and 2007 in order to conduct joint research to evaluate how fast-charge infrastructure may be developed for EVs. Fleet testing by five power companies was conducted in 2007. The car has a range of 130 kilometres (80 mi) for the 16 kW·h lithium-ion pack and 160 kilometres (100 mi) for the 20 kW·h pack. Top speed is 130 kilometres per hour (80 mph). Also known as the i-EV, it is planned for sale or lease in Japan and other markets in 2009 and 2010.It may also be sold in European markets as the Peugeot 1001 and Citroën Re-Volt.

During early 2009 the i MiEV was exhibited in Australia at the Melbourne Motor Show, following which it extensively toured Australia. Mitsubishi fitted out a diesel-powered truck to carry the i MiEV between its many engagements across the country. Ironically, the truck was equipped with a stand-alone diesel-powered generator to re-charge the i MiEV.

During January - March 2009 the i MiEV was brought to New Zealand as part of an electric vehicle trial, which saw the i MiEV travel the length of the country testing infrastructure and demonstrating the vehicle to the public.

Cadillac Sixteen

The Cadillac Sixteen was a prototype of a stylish and high performance automobile first presented by Cadillac in 2003.

The vehicle was equipped with a 32-valve V16 concept engine displacing 13.6 liters (~830 cu. in) and was mated to a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The engine featured fuel-saving Active Fuel Management technology, much improved from its notorious ancestor, debuting in 2004 on some 2005 GM models. On the Sixteen, it would seamlessly shut down twelve cylinders in light driving, eight during strenuous driving, and only awaken the entire engine under full acceleration. With this ingenious system, the engine was capable of 20 mpg Imperial under normal conditions. The engine was said to produce 1,000 horsepower (750 kW) using no form of forced induction.

Though originally designed for the European market, the BLS was introduced to the Arabian, Mexican, South African, and South Korean markets for the 2007 model year. The car has so far not been a huge success, however. For instance, in 2007, Cadillac sold a total of 282 cars on the German market (in a market totalling 3.15 million annual sales), and in 2006, just 3,257 cars left the factory in Sweden, followed by 2,772 in 2007

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing Again Detailed By Mercedes AMG

2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing, exterior front and side view

After releasing details of their new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing to select publications about a week-and-a-half ago, Mercedes AMG today has released a lengthy press release highlighting again the forthcoming model. Because we've already detailed the model once I'll abstain from doing so again; however, I will let Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche talk briefly about the new Gullwing. According to Dieter, "Mercedes-Benz is presenting an exhilarating super sports car in the guise of the new SLS AMG, which is bound to set the pulses of all car enthusiasts racing that extra bit faster. The SLS AMG is emotion pure and simple for the Mercedes-Benz brand and is set to become one of the most alluring sports cars of our era."

Volker Mornhinweg, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, adds: "Our customers will experience with the SLS AMG the expertise of our sports car manufacturer Mercedes-AMG, built up over 40 years of motor racing, along with the kind of scintillating design that only a top athlete from the Mercedes-Benz stable can offer."

Remember, this is the first time in Mercedes AMG's history that they've produced a vehicle entirely in-house. And while I'm certainly a fan of the work turned out by AMG, even coming close to creating a vehicle that can match the legendary status of the original Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing is certainly a tall order. Personally, I'd much rather opt for the original Gullwing over the reincarnated version regardless of what technology the SLS possesses, but that's just me.

Time will tell how successful rekindling a legend will be, but in the meantime, keep scrolling for 50 or so photos highlighting the new Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing along with the official press release detailing the model.

McLaren cars, Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz has also produced a sports car with McLaren Cars, an extension of the collaboration by which Mercedes engines are used by the Team McLaren-Mercedes Formula One racing team, which is part owned by Mercedes. The 2003 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren has a carbon fiber/fibre body with a 5.4l V8 supercharged engine. This is the same block as featured in SL55 AMG and the CLS55 AMG, though modified to give 460 kW (630 PS; 620 hp) and 780 N·m (575 ft·lb) of torque. The SLR has a maximum speed of 337 kilometres per hour (209 mph) and costs approximately US$500,000. Due to European pedestrian-protection regulations, McLaren has decided to cease production of the SLR in 2009.

Sport utility vehicle

A sport utility vehicle (SUV) is a generic marketing description for a vehicle similar to a station wagon but built on a light-truck chassis. Usually equipped with four-wheel drive for on or off-road ability, some SUVs include the towing capacity of a pickup truck with the passenger-carrying space of a minivan. SUVs are considered light trucks and often share the same platforms of pickups and thus are regulated less stringently than passenger cars under two major laws in the U.S.—the Energy Policy and Conservation Act for fuel economy standards, and the Clean Air Act for emissions standards

It is known in some countries as an "off-road vehicle" or "four-wheel drive", often abbreviated to "4WD" or "4x4", pronounced "four-by-four". However, not all SUVs have four-wheel drive capabilities. Conversely, not all 4WD passenger vehicles are SUVs. Off-road vehicles are a very different class of vehicles, being vehicles primarily built for off-road use. However this distinction is often not made by the general public and in the media. Although some SUVs have off-road capabilities, this is often a secondary role and they often do not have the ability to switch between 2WD, 4WD high gearing and 4WD low gearing. While automakers frequently tout a particular SUV's off-road prowess with advertising and naming, the daily use of SUVs is largely paved roads and urban areas. This also causes the term SUV to be used as a denigrating term by owners of "real" off-road vehicles.

Cadillac Eldorado

The Eldorado is an upper-tier Cadillac model manufactured from 1953 to 2002. Counting its multiple incarnations it was the longest running American personal luxury car and last of its kind.

Throughout Eldorado's 50-year run, the model varied considerably in bodystyle and mechanical layout but always remained a desirable member of the Cadillac line. An even more exclusive variant, the Eldorado Brougham, was made between 1957 and 1960 as a rolling showcar of Cadillac engineering expertise.

Toyota 7

The Toyota 7 was a racing car developed by Toyota Motor Company and subsidiary Yamaha Motor Corporation. Designed primarily for use in the Japanese Grand Prix, the cars were Toyota's first custom-built racing car, competing under the FIA's Group 7 rules, similar to the Can Am series in North America and Interserie in Europe.

The 7, known by the internal code 415S was developed by Jiro Kawano, who had also developed the 2000GT that Toyota had previously entered in the Japanese Grand Prix. Yamaha constructed the chassis while the new 5.0 litre V8 engine was built by Toyota. The V8 that powered the 7 replaced the Straight-6 engine used in the 2000GT due to the increase power potential of the larger engine. This engine was capable of producing up to 300 hp, thanks to the addition of a dual overhead cam design. However, the 3.0 litre V8 which was used in the early years was not powerful enough to compete with the Chevrolet and Porsche-powered competitors. This led to the development of a 5.0 litre version, capable of 600 hp. The initial bodywork was similar to other Group 7 cars, with an open two-seater cockpit and large intakes behind the doors. Exhaust pipes were placed directly on top of the engine, exiting straight off the tail of the car. A simple rollhoop protected the driver.

Toyota first introduced the iQ as a concept city car at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. Toyota later revealed the production version at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show, with Japanese sales beginning in October 2008 and UK sales in January 2009.

The name iQ, an initialism of the term intelligence quotient, recalls a competitor, the Smart Fortwo. According to Toyota, the i stands for "individuality" "innovation" and "intelligence". While the Q stands for "quality" and points to the iQ's "cubic" shape and "cues" a new value and lifestyle in the automotive market.

Toyota TF105

The Toyota TF105/105B was a Formula One car for the 2005 Formula One season. It was designed by Mike Gascoyne. The year was statistically the team's most successful, with 88 points, five podium positions and a fastest lap. The low-point was the withdrawal of the team from the 2005 United States Grand Prix, due to Michelin tyre safety concerns, as Ralf Schumacher's left front tyre deinflated on Indianapolis' famous last corner in Friday practice and Schumacher crashed into the wall and had to be taken to hospital. Ricardo Zonta replaced him, but neither of the Toyotas started the race. The team eventually finished fourth in the Championship, their best ever Championship placing.

Toyota WiLL

The Toyota WiLL series consists of three individually-designed cars, based on the mechanicals of other Toyota models. The series was intended to appeal to markets that were not covered by Toyota's mainstream range, and to discover how commercially feasible such unusual designs were. The American Scion range is based on a similar concept.
